Weekly Communication 04/01/19

Good afternoon Whitney Student-athletes, Parents, and Supporters - Just when we all thought that the rain had subsided and we were on the way to some nice weather… Mother Nature decided otherwise. If you’re an outdoor sport be ready to make some adjustments later in the week.

CELEBRATIONS:
  • Baseball - In frosh/soph baseball Oakmont scored 1 run in the 1st inning but Whitney answered and scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning, Oakmont scored in the 4th and 5th innings to tie the game. The game went to extra innings and Oakmont scored a run in the top of the 8th. Whitney scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th for the walk off win. Hunter Smith pitched 6 strong innings in the game.
  • Golf (Men) The Wildcats came into the match undefeated in league play with wins over Granite Bay and Del Oro. Only 2 Wildcats had played Serrano Country Club but the Cats battled and played some exceptional golf to gain sole possession of first place in the SFL. Leading the way for the Cats was junior Sam Sommerhauser who shot a 1 under par 35. He was followed by sophomore Will Phelan and freshman C.J Gassner who fired 2 over 38s.
  • Softball - Saturday was the Home Town Throw Down game against Rocklin and this year was a little different because it's now a league game. The game showcased some great pitching from both teams until the sixth inning when the Lady Cats exploded for six runs. Ni Trinidad pitched a complete game only giving up 3 hits and 3 earned runs. Nia also helped out with her bat with a 2 RBI double in the sixth. Other notables: Audrey Smith 3-4, Mackenzie Macfarlane 3-4.
  • STUNT - Whitney hosted Rocklin at home and the Wildcats started off the game with a level 6 Partner stunt taking the first point of the game. Rocklin answered that with the score being tied at the end of the first quarter 3-3. Rocklin continued to match points and took the lead after the half 11-6. Coming out of the gates in quarter four with a level 6 routine, Rocklin forfeited and watched as the Wildcats took all three points closing the gap in the score. With 2 rounds left, an intense game with both teams fighting to take the win. At the end of the fourth quarter the score was tied 14-14 sending the game into sudden death overtime! Rocklin had possession and called jumps and tumbling, their strongest score quarter of the night. Whitney took the floor and executed a solid routine taking the point and winning the game! This is the first time in four years that Whitney beat Rocklin.
  • Swimming - Against highly ranked Granite Bay, Morgan Votava won her two events in the 200 IM and 100 Back and Antonio Yambot had a great meet PRing in the 100 Fly and 100 Back.
  • Tennis (M) - Rainouts
  • Track and Field - Girls 4x4 ran to a season best and a come from behind victory over Rocklin.  Mason Pangman, Jessica Franco, Taylor Bedrin and Emily Martin ran to our fastest time this season in the victory. Chris buck threw a big PR in the discus.  Joey Souto ran the fastest time in the 400 in the SFL this season.  Wyatt Lawson set a PR in the 110 high hurdles.
  • Volleyball (Men) - Score reports lacked information
ITEMS OF NOTE:
  • The third quarter ended a few weeks ago and we are now past the grade change deadline. Any student-athlete declared eligible or ineligible will remain so until the end of the spring semester.
  • Want to talk to your student-athlete about vaping but unsure how to go about it. Student-athletes caught vaping will suffer not only school consequences but athletic consequences as well. Here’s a link to an article on vaping to get the conversation started - https://www.beaumont.org/health-wellness/blogs/dangers-of-vaping. If it is a dab pen (vape pen with marijuana) the consequences will be even more severe. We have asked the coaching staff to open these lines of communication as well and talk with the student-athletes about vaping and the harmful effects on the human body.
