Weekly Communication 3/4/19

Good evening Whitney Student-athletes, families, and supporters - I’m sure many of you are sick of the rain by now and ready for some nice, sunny California weather. I know the spring sports are ready for the sun. Thank you for being patient as we navigate the rain and very wet facilities. It appears we might be able to get in some outdoor games this week so stay tuned. Tomorrow (Monday) brings on our annual incoming 9th grade showcase; a night that is always fun as we get to meet next years freshmen class.

CELEBRATIONS:
  • Baseball - No games played
  • Softball - The lady cats took down Sacramento Bee #1 ranked Sheldon in this non-league contest. The cats jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on to win 4-3 in this early season battle.
  • STUNT - The STUNT team competed in their first game of the season and took down perennial power, Granite Bay, in league action. Great start to the season for the lady cats.
  • Swimming - For now the 12th year in a row, Whitney Varsity Girls have defeated Rocklin in swimming.  This year it was extremely close coming down to a single event.  The girls won 94-89.  Natalie Hogenboom took 1st in the 200 Free, Adrianna Williams took first in the 500 Free, Shannon Bone took 1st in the 100 Back and Kate Jara took first in the 100 Breaststroke. The Men's Varsity Swim team beat Rocklin 96-87.  This has not been done in 10 years.  The team had some great PRs. Ryan Walker won the 50 Free, Blaec Dettner won the 200 Free, Edi Stefanesceu won the 100 Breaststroke and Connor Jordan won the 100 and 500 Freestyle.
  • Tennis - No matches played
  • Track and Field - No official meets held
  • Volleyball (Men) - No matches played
ITEMS OF NOTE:
  • Showcase night is Monday, March 4th. The doors to the gym open at 5:45 pm and the general assembly begins at 6:00 pm. After the general assembly, the incoming 9th graders and their families will be released to tour the campus. The sports will be in the small gym.
  • SFL All-sport Standings after adding in winter sports - Men’s teams have a total of 52 points which puts them in a tie for 4th place (only 3 points separate 2nd through 6th place). Women’s teams have a total of 72 points and are in 2nd place by 1 point. A remarkable feat for our first year in the SFL.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK -  I listened to this podcast (along with another 4 hours worth on my drive to Enterprise High School in Redding, CA last Tuesday) and knew I needed to share it with you. Does a great job looking at adversity and responses to it. But even more importantly, looks at situations as adversity or opportunity and follows up with examples. I loved that idea… when a challenging situation presents itself is it adversity or is it an opportunity? This podcast will definitely give you a new perspective.
