In early December, two Whitney High School students decided to create a community service event that would change lives. Megan Soares (cross country) and Kaitlin Bullock (volleyball) set out to hold a sports equipment drive for the Santa Rosa fire victims. Little did they know, that their intention to host a school-wide equipment drive would reach the local news and then span several local cities and regions. Megan and Kaitlin heard that many of the fields and athletic areas in Santa Rosa were in good shape, however, the kids of all ages had lost their sports equipment in the horrific fires that claimed lives and homes in that region. After promoting their sports drive on social media and through several local TV stations, these two young ladies with the help of several sports teams on campus, reps from sporting good companies, community members, parents, athletes, and more were able to collect an approximate values of $25,000 in sports eqiupment. This equipment ranged from cleats and baseballs/softballs to bats, bags, golf clubs, and more. On Friday, December 22nd these two young ladies had the honor the packaging up the equipment and heading to Santa Rosa to deliver it.
The Athletic Department couldn't be prouder as these ladies and several of our athletes and families stepped up to carry out this amazing event. Below are pictures as we were ready to depart Whitney HS and head to the Santa Rosa region and pictures that were taken once we arrived. As we strive to be a dynamic program and teach the student-athletes life skills and family values, these two young ladies exemplify that vision. We are extremely proud of what was accomplished and the role we played in helping out a fellow community.
